Making the switch to working from home often means that you no longer have access to a designated work area. As a result, this usually means that you will need to set up your own area within your home before you get started. However, before deciding on exactly which area you will be setting up as an office, there are definitely a few things to consider.
The Size of the Room
The size of your home office space makes a huge difference. You might be tempted to turn that extra-small closet into an office, but be assured that this will do way more harm to your endeavors than good! Small spaces cause more stress and stifle creativity. Plus, there are usually fewer windows and a general absence of natural light… which is an essential key to remaining upbeat and positive throughout the workday.
When choosing a room, try to choose a space that is large enough to let you work in. Make sure that your chair is not bumping into things when you roll backwards, and make sure that you have enough room for a sizeable desk, a bookshelf (if you need it), filing cabinets, computer supplies, or anything else you might need. Having enough space to get the job done will give you a huge advantage every day. Not only will you enjoy getting to work in the morning more in a nice, large office… but you will find that your productivity is much better in an environment like this.
Choose the Right Furnishings
Setting up your home office is not just about the necessities. You need to plan your work space so that you feel good in it. Here are a few extras that might help to make your office space more conducive to creativity and effectiveness.

- Inspirational posters
- An additional chair or two
- Some decorations related to your favorite hobby (as long as this is not too distracting)
- A cd or Mp3 player (for playing relaxing waterfall or forest sounds… I do this all the time!)
Of course, it doesn’t have to stop there. Coffee tables, bookshelves, desk ornaments, rugs, plants, or even the color of the walls are all optional and changeable!
You will also need to choose some basics for your office. A high quality office chair like a black leather reclining chairs are especially luxurious for any home office, a desk that suits your style and needs, and a computer are usually essentials that you will have to have to get through the day.
Designing Your ‘Successful’ Office
When trying to decide exactly what decoration or color to use in your home office, consider asking yourself this questions… what would my ideal, ‘success’ office look like? What sort of environment would I be most likely to succeed in?
When I first started working from home, I used to spend a lot of time at coffee shops on the internet, just to get out of the house and into a different atmosphere. I noticed right away that the coffee shops with an atmosphere that I felt more ‘professional’ in were the ones where I got more done. The others were nice, but were usually too distracting to allow me to get a lot accomplished.
Your surroundings play a huge role in how successful you are… especially when it comes to working from home. You need to be a self-starter every day! You can’t afford to hate your own office. Your workspace should be YOUR domain where YOU make the rules! If you want a certain color, paint it! If you want a certain type of desk, buy it! If you want to use the larger room… do it! Don’t feel like you are splurging… consider it an investment in your business and in your success.
