When I first saw the Sauder Studio Edge Beginnings Tiered Desk my first thought was “Oh wow, what a desk!” This is more than a desk, this is a piece of fine furniture capable of holding a laptop. It’s really evident looking at the Bush Pictor 48″ Metal & Glass Desk that the 21st century executive requires little to no paper files. When I first looked at this desk, I actually, truth be told, nearly passed it over.

It would be safe to say that I dismissed it as a desk not worth reviewing. I saw it and asked myself, “Who on earth would buy this desk? Where are the files? Where’s the class? Where’s the place for the printer? This desk is far too small for an adult to use.”  Yes, as I review desks, I am prone to talking to myself as I work it all out in my mind. And then my nephew, the web designer who owns his own firm, gave me the “low down” on this desk. He explained to me precisely who this desk would appeal to and why.

Raised on computers and fancy gadgetry, my nephew and everyone in his age group are unaware of life before computers when people wrote things down with a pen and paper and made files using pendaflex and manilla folders. If you were to see his office, you’d see why this desk appeals to him and people just like himself. There isn’t a single paper file to be found anywhere. I asked where it all was. “In here.” He said, pointing to his laptop. “I carry my files with me everywhere. Whether a client comes to my office or I visit him or her in their offices, I take all my marketing files, everything I am working on for them and bring it up, right before their eyes.” I asked what happens if a file gets lost? “That’s what external hard drives are for.”

I then asked what happens if he wants to have a meeting and explain something that he can’t draw on the laptop. He pointed out the cup on the right side of the desk, which displays markers in every color. “I have an idea, I draw it out, right on the desk. When I am done or if I dislike what I have created, I erase it and start over.” I asked him what happens if he likes the idea and wants to send it to a client who may not be in the room, or even awake at 3:00 in the morning when he gets his best ideas. “I take a photo of it and email it to him or her.” Why didn’t I think of that?

He then inspected the desk very closely. He began trying to shake it. “Very sturdy”, he muttered. “Whatever metal they use, it’s very strong. The glass is tempered; it’s not going anywhere!”

“Plugged in” in ever sense of the word, he saw this desk and said, “Very nice! I want one!”

I’d say that it’s pretty evident who this desk appeals to. Although I’d have thought it belonged in the room of a college student or someone who is just starting out and has very little money to spend on a “real desk”, was I way off! Today’s executive who has no time to file things in a drawer, has all his or her ideas, accomplishments and client files on his or her hard drive will love the Bush Pictor 48″ Metal & Glass Desk. What I saw as a design flaw as being short on space, is by no means a flaw. As my nephew pointed out to me, “It’s highly functional because it’s the ultimate in minimalism. Who needs anything more than a surface to work on, enough space to draw out ideas and a place to plug in?”

Z-Line Designs Nero Desk and Bookcase – ZL2021DBU

The Z-Line Designs Nero Desk is one of my favorites for home use, or as a student work center. At first glance, you may think that this affordable black metal and glass space-saver is too cool for anyone over the age of 25, but NASCAR driver Justin Wilson likes it – and I have to admit that I do, too. As an admitted desk enthusiast, I’m always impressed when designers manage to find new ways to shape the basic components of a functional work area into what amounts to modern art.

Design Features I Like

First off, this desk is just plain fun to look at. The sleek, staggered glass shelves riding side-car to the compact desktop almost gives the impression that the desk is in motion. The black powder coated metal frame and clear tempered glass are contemporary and stylish. Although the glass gives a “floating” impression, it’s actually a very sturdy design with reinforced plates on all joints and tension bars for stability. Another nice plus: the glass makes a really smooth writing surface that’s also easy to clean.

Z-Line Designs Nero Desk

Although the attached 3-tier shelves are called a “bookcase” by the manufacturer, they are quite versatile and can be utilized for far more than just books. The shelves are nice and wide, and make a functional extension to this little workstation. Use them to store reference material, stylish file boxes, or even a printer. If the admittedly small desktop doesn’t provide enough work area, one or more of the shelves make a handy additional workspace as well. The pull-out keyboard tray runs the full length of the desktop, and offers plenty of room for a mouse.

Desk Limitations…

The compact, streamlined design of this desk doesn’t leave room for a lot of extras. Two that are missing (and might have been nice) are cord grommets and a CPU stand. Still, for the price, and the fact that more and more people are making a laptop their primary computer, these lacks don’t really detract from my overall recommendation.

You might want to consider organizing any power cords with cord clips to maintain the uncluttered look of this workstation. You’ll also need to invest in desktop (or desk-side, in this case) organizers for pens, staples, files and the like as there is no built in storage for these types of basic supplies.

Recommended For…

If modern and sleek are your style and you’re looking for a place to set up a computer for home use, then this just may be the desk for you if. It’s stylish and sturdy enough for a teenager’s bedroom or dorm room, and makes a great accent for any area furnished in a contemporary style. For writing, doing household accounts or surfing the internet, this is a great workstation.

Not Recommended For…

If you’re looking to set up a functioning home office or need to furnish a commercial or professional office, you may need a bit more than this desk has to offer. It’s not designed for meeting with clients, nor does it have the storage that a business user may need. Although – if space is at a premium – you could make this desk work in a home office by getting creative (or simply digital) with your others needs: going paperless would eliminate the need for a file cabinet, and reference material could be accessed in digital form.

My Final Verdict
