One of the more frustrating things about desks for home office use is that sometimes when companies design them to be compact to fit into any size room, they neglect to address two important factors. One is: Lack of space doesn’t mean you are less productive than if you were working in an office building. The other is: just because you are working from home doesn’t mean you need anything less sturdy either. Everything You Want in a Desk, Nothing You Don’t

Probably the most suprising thing about this desk is its price. I saw its features, which are myriad and thought to myself, “wow, now that’s a great deal!”

So, what can you get for under $750 nowadays? The short answer is plenty, but let’s run through it all, shall we? For one thing, you get not one but two desks. If space provides, you can create a desk with a left or right hand return or if your office is longer than it is wider, you can have one up against the wall and the other opposite it. The nice thing about this arrangement is that you have created a kind of command central or a cocoon-feel. Both desks are constructed using 14-gauge steel for the interior and 18 or 22 gauge on the exterior. The ‘or’ refers to where extra kryptonite is needed in places that might otherwise take more of a beating, such as corners.

Both desks are available in 60, 66 or 72-inch widths. If your room is plenty big, by all means, spend the extra money and get the largest you can afford. If you are anything like me, you will fill it out. I personally can never have enough surface area to work with. The CSII 36 comes complete with the obligatory keyboard drawer, leveling guides and grommets, but one thing that it has that most in this class don’t are customizable storage options. Usually reserved for executive style desks, both pedestals offer you a choice of the configuration you want. Choose from:

Who Do I See Inside Command Central?

I absolutely see this set up in a home office. I think it’s perfect if you have a home-based business and you need all the amenities you’re used to, but you work from home. Although it’s stylish, it won’t look out of place or too ornate in your home.

Who Don’t I See at the Helm of THIS Command Central?

For all its style, functionality and cool options, I don’t see an executive, such as a CEO or VP at its helm. It is indeed stylish and it will appeal to a broad spectrum of tastes, but it doesn’t have that executive flair a person in that position requires. I probably don’t see it in your son or daughter’s college dorm room or bedroom at home, either. It has more going for it than either situation calls for. I could be wrong, but most teenagers won’t appreciate a desk set like this.

What’s My Overall Take on Things?

Strong, attractive, not overstated or ostentatious, this desk will stand out for its function and design not for being over the top. Judging from the construction and attention to detail, I think you will own this desk for many, many years. When you need a table top or desk top that can also tilt to a good degree, you know it and there is no substitution. These kind of desks are not for just anyone. These are what I call niche desks, because they fulfill a specific function. Drafters, engineers, artists and graphic designers all need the ability or the freedom to tilt the tabletop so as to receive a better view of their work. It helps alleviate back pain from hunching over the desk to tend to minute detail and keeps the perspective accurate. The only alternative for someone who requires this feature is to tape the paper or board to the wall, but this is often less that satisfactory which is why the Mayline CSII tilt top table is so very necessary and as it happens, also versatile.

Design Features I Like

There are several features to this desk that really stand out to me.

The moving top piece may be adjusted from 0° to 60° in 19 preset positions. While you might not have total control over the angle, nineteen possible positions will more than likely offer you the exact tilt you want. Plus, the CSII tilt top can be laid flat in a jiffy, so you do not have to move between two different desks. Then there is the handy pencil top which comes standard, and holds pencils, quills, pens, or similar items.

Unlike other desks, this one does not have a grommet for wires to feed down into, thus moving them out of the way and that makes sense here; with an angled surface, you will need a lamp that clamps to the table. You have three attractive finishes from which to choose: Desert Sage/ Suntone, Black/ Crown Cherry, and Medium Tone/Windswept Pewter. You can even choose the width of the table you would like, from 36”, to 42” to 48”, perfect for customizing depending on what size paper or board you use most often. The full, sturdy skirt is also much nicer than the usual spindly pole legs designer seem to push on us.

Who I Picture Behind This Desk

A desk like this can be used with a lot of versatility, but it is absolutely essential to those who need to draft in scale or keep their own perspective on large drawings and paintings. Graphic novelists definitely need an angled surface for their panel work, draftsmen and engineers do as well, especially if they are using very large sheets for detailed work. So it is for those who know they need the freedom of adjusting their work surface, though it could be quite a boon for enthusiasts who enjoy certain hobbies like photo work, collages, design, scrapbooking, teaching, and the like.

Who This Desk Is Not For

While it has its place in a home office depending on the type of work, the ability to angle the desktop simply is not a need for most people. If you have never lamented not having a desk with this feature or you do not foresee the need for one in conjunction with your hobbies, then I would suggest you go with something else.

My Final Assessment

If your job depends on an angled work surface, this is the desk for you. It is solid, well made, handsome and can be used as a regular table top when necessary. Bush My Space Easy Alamosa Ladder Desk in Classic Black

When you think of a desk, what comes to mind? I tend to conjure up a basic look, almost certainly, rectangular in shape, maybe even with a hutch. I would hazard to guess this is the standard image for most folks, but if you applied it to the Bush My Space Easy Alamosa Ladder Desk in classic black, you’d be in for a surprise.

When I first saw this desk, I wasn’t quite sure what to think; it’s very different from what I’m used to.

A split second later, though and I found myself really liking its original structure and geometric design. It’s not unlike an artist’s easel and seems to inspire creativity and energy. Or, to go with a different frame of reference, it’s almost like a waterfall, frozen in black. There’s definitely a Zen feel to it, tranquil and peaceful. Add some flowing greenery and you’d have a personal, meditative haven.

Truly Contemporary Details…

This lovely ladder desk has a total of three surfaces in goes-with-anything classic black. The top stretch is great for holding papers, speakers, plants, books or miscellaneous. Under that, you find the main work surface, large and ample, with a fantastic big drawer running the length of it, perfect for pens, notebooks, tape, staples, or whatever you need to have at hand. The bottom shelf was thoughtfully included to help keep the printer, fax, or scanner close by.

The slim dimensions go up rather than out at 52″ H x 23.125″ W x 36.25″ D, meaning it takes up little room, but offers a lot in return. The lower kick board helps keep wires from tangling up your feet and keeps the sleek lines of this ladder desk clean and tidy. Speaking of lines, it’s hard not admire the modern, artsy feel this desk brings with it, considering the simple yet elegant practicality of the piece. Like a ladder to greater aspiration or an easel for your most creative thoughts, the Alamosa ladder desk offers something for every personality.

It Speaks to a Certain Nature…

I can see that this desk, innovative and structured as it is, would not be for everyone, or at least, it may not match every theme choice. I definitely view it as a great addition to a kicky, fun home office with a bohemian vibe, or as an excellent choice for an Asian-inspired suite. It’s very versatile in that it can be played up or down, used for inner inspiration or inner sanctuary, in a minimalist setting, art deco, or any number of conceptions.

My Humble Conclusion…

It can be a center piece or an accent, but it will always be striking and unusual, so if that kind of different look isn’t for you, I would not recommend this desk. Bush Jagger 59″ W Comfort Zone Cart

Although it resembles something one might find in the bedroom of the son or daughter in “The Jetsons” cartoon, don’t let that put you off from considering the Bush Jagger 59″ W Comfort Zone Cart. It is probably the most functional and stylish desk/carts I have seen or reviewed.

The Present Catches Up to the Future

As futuristic as it looks, it just shows you what happens when someone who is as busy as he or she is short on space designs a piece of furniture. The result is nothing short of practical meets “cool”.

Clearly designed with space constraints in mind, this desk/cart can fit nearly anywhere. There is no square inch that hasn’t got a function. From the top down, you will use every shelf. The ledge for the monitor is perfectly placed in between two shelves that are ideal for anything from office supplies to speakers to knick-knacks. If you are a “post-it™” note person, the black wall of the two top shelves look almost empty without several notes on them; the more colorful, the better. Underneath the top shelves is the combination writing/work station. Below that is the keyboard tray, of course slides easily back when not in use.

Behind the left DVD/CD tower is the perfect place to hide your printer. Below can easily store books or a ream or two of paper. If you don’t have a desktop and prefer a laptop, in the section behind the right CD/DVD tower can be used for more storage, books, or bins for more office supplies. Another shelf below that can house really anything you have in mind. I think that’s what I love about this desk/cart. It’s reminiscent of this futuristic space station; no detail was left off to work for the busy student or person who freelances from home.

A lateral filing cabinet sits comfortably behind what you’ll naturally want to use as a footrest. Another feature I love is that caster wheels allow you to move this cart anywhere in the room, once it’s assembled.

Who Would Benefit From This Workstation the Most?

Although this is one of the most functional pieces I have seen of late, due to its look, it’s likely going to appeal to a student. I can also see it working nicely for a freelance graphic designer or a writer, both of whom need everything easily accessible to them. The Bush Jagger 59 inch desk would also work quite nicely in a college dorm room, given how small many of them are. Design Features I Like

The manufacturer’s description – a “rectangular shell” – while accurate, doesn’t fully do it justice.  With no shelves or drawers, this desk is designed to provide two things: an ample work surface, and a professional meeting place.  For all of it’s simplicity, this desk does what it’s designed for quite well, with well thought out features that earn it my recommendation for the professional office.

Although you can’t see it in the pictures, I can assure you that the underside of the desk is completely open.  There’s plenty of leg room underneath, which makes it a comfortable fit even if you’re taller than average.  The solid sides and back extend from the desktop to the floor, so file boxes or other items can be placed under the desk without giving the office a cluttered appearance.    (You can even slip off your shoes while you work without anyone being the wiser!)

A Few Little Extras

The back wall of the desk is recessed enough that a visitor can comfortably pull up a chair without bumping their knees.  This is a nice feature when your work includes going over documents with a client, or in-office consultations.  It’s a practical, well thought out design bonus that is missing in similar, lower-quality desks of this sort – and one of the reasons I particularly like this one.
The desk itself has clean lines and a nice laminate finish that makes a great writing surface.  There are two desktop grommets that allow cords to be tidily tucked away.  It’s also quite sturdy, and comes with attachable feet that can be adjusted individually to help you achieve a level work surface regardless of your flooring.

Recommended For…

This is the ideal desk if you are looking for a minimalist design. This desk comes in several lengths and different finishes that will complement either modern or traditional décor.  CommClad has some complementary pieces that will expand it into a complete L- or U- shaped workstation or add matching storage space for your office.

Not Recommended For…

I wouldn’t recommend  it when space is tight, or when your work calls for a lot of storage close at hand leg room is at a premium over storage space.

My final verdict
